Necessary Information

Specimen source is required.

Specimen Required Defines the optimal specimen. This field describes the type of specimen required to perform the test and the preferred volume to complete testing. The volume allows automated processing, fastest throughput and, when indicated, repeat or reflex testing.

Preferred: Green top (sodium or lithium heparin)

Acceptable: SPS/Isolator System

Specimen Volume: 10 mL per culture

Collection Instructions:

1. Send specimen in original tube.

2. Please note when sending SPS tube, it must be clearly labeled SPS. If label is obscured, sample may be cancelled as ACD (yellow top) is not an acceptable tube type.

If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Microbiology Test Request Form (T244) with the specimen (http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/it-mmfiles/microbiology_test_request_form.pdf)

Specimen Minimum Volume The amount of sample necessary to provide a clinically relevant result as determined by the Laboratory.
