CPT Codes for Molecular Pathology
effective January 1, 2012
Effective 1/1/2012, the AMA is implementing 100+ new CPT codes for molecular pathology. These new codes will eventually replace the current "stacking" codes (83890-83914). Even though the AMA is making the new codes effective, the national Medicare office is not pricing the codes for 2012. In fact, they are leaving it up to each local Medicare carrier to determine if they want to accept and pay the new codes in 2012.
Because of the uncertainty with payers, Mayo Medical Laboratories will continue to invoice our clients in the same manner as we do today using the stacking codes. However, starting on 1/1/2012, both the "new" CPT code and the stacking codes will be indicated in the test catalog. Pricing and test structure will not be impacted.
