Serum lipoproteins are surveyed by a combination of electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation, and automated enzymatic quantitation of cholesterol and triglycerides in the quantitatively significant fractions (HDL, LDL, VLDL, and Lp[a]) to evaluate the lipoproteinemias accurately.(Ellefson RD, Jiminez BJ, Smith RC:  Pre-beta [or alpha-2] lipoprotein of high density in human blood.
