Comprehensive Coagulation Disorder Testing
Testing of Bleeding and Thrombosing Disorders
The Special Coagulation Laboratory has made many important contributions to the knowledge of hemostasis through basic research and careful analysis of the results of testing and treatment of patients with bleeding and thrombosing disorders. Research ranges from pioneering studies in thrombosis, hirudin, warfarin, and vitamin K physiology to cutting edge platelet physiology. Additional features include:
- Large repertoire of test procedures, using state-of-the-art technology, to address virtually all clinical coagulation disorders
- Extensive clinical correlation with Mayo Clinic experience, large esoteric test volume, and experience with many unusual cases help ensure broad expertise
- Close liaison with coagulation research aids development of new testing procedures, refinements of older procedures, and investigation of unusual cases
- Ready access to the personnel and expertise of the
federally funded Mayo Comprehensive Hemophilia and
Mayo Thrombophilia Centers for assistance in diagnosis
and management of patients with hereditary or acquired
bleeding or thrombosing disorders - The Special Coagulation DNA-Diagnostic Laboratory facilitates testing for hereditary bleeding and thrombosing disorders
Optimal Test Utilization
Our test panels link laboratory
testing choices to specifically address a clinical question.
Because etiologies of coagulation and bleeding disorders
vary from common to very rare, thorough, efficient and
economical reflexive algorithms are used with guidance from
experienced staff to add appropriate tests and minimize
unnecessary testing. An interpretation of the panel results
is formulated by a coagulation consultant.
Expert Consultants
Our clinical and laboratory technologists and physicians offer broad expertise:
- Physician directors with experience in hematology, hematopathology, cardiovascular, molecular genetic, platelet function and electron microscopy, and protein chemistry
- Consulting hematologists, cardiovascular specialists, and hematopathologists with expertise and interest in clinical and laboratory hemostasis and thrombosis to provide test panel interpretation and consultation
- Clinical technical coagulation specialists to assist clients
with questions regarding appropriate testing, specimen
requirements, and interpretation of results
