Blood cells are normally produced from bone marrow. Various diseases may affect the blood cell production in the bone marrow, especially the hematologic diseases and the non-hematologic diseases involving the bone marrow.

Reference Values Describes reference intervals and additional information for interpretation of test results. May include intervals based on age and sex when appropriate. Intervals are Mayo-derived, unless otherwise designated. If an interpretive report is provided, the reference value field will state this.

Interpretation Provides information to assist in interpretation of the test results
The laboratory will provide an interpretive report of hematoxylin and eosin stained slides, iron stain, and additional stains if necessary.
Cautions Discusses conditions that may cause diagnostic confusion, including improper specimen collection and handling, inappropriate test selection, and interfering substances
Specimens must be fixed in formalin for 1 to 2 hours; then the fixed marrow core should be sent to the laboratory in buffered saline.
