Helicobacter pylori Culture

Specimen Type Describes the specimen type needed for testing

Varies

Specimen Required Defines the optimal specimen. This field describes the type of specimen required to perform the test and the preferred volume to complete testing. The volume allows automated processing, fastest throughput and, when indicated, repeat or reflex testing.

Forms: If not ordering electronically, submit a Microbiology Request Form (Supply T244) with the specimen.

Specimen must be received in laboratory within 24 hours of collection.

The MML Expedite procedure is recommended to ensure specimens are processed as quickly as possible once received at Mayo Medical Laboratories. Contact 800-533-1710 to add this procedure to your order. A nominal fee will be charged.

Specimen source is required; include the specific anatomic source.

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Gastric biopsy

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions: Acquire biopsied tissue; moisten with sterile saline.

Acceptable:

Specimen Type: Gastric brushing or gastric aspirate

Container/Tube: Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions: Aspirate contents with a syringe.

Specimen Minimum Volume Defines the amount of specimen required to perform an assay once, including instrument and container dead space. Submitting the minimum specimen volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory or perform reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum specimen volume may result in a QNS (quantity not sufficient) result, requiring a second specimen to be collected.

0.5 mL or 0.5 x 0.2 x 0.2 cm sized piece of tissue
