Serum Red
Specimen Required Defines the optimal specimen. This field describes the type of specimen required to perform the test and the preferred volume to complete testing. The volume allows automated processing, fastest throughput and, when indicated, repeat or reflex testing.
Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s). (Serum gel tube is not
acceptable.) Spin down and send 1 mL of serum frozen in plastic
vial. Specimens drawn just before or within 15 minutes
of next dose represent a trough level. Specimens drawn within
15-30 minutes after the end of an intravenous infusion, 45-60 minutes
after an intramuscular injection, or 90 minutes after oral intake represent
a peak level.
Note: 1. Specify all antimicrobials being used to treat patient.
2. Indicate peak or trough on request form.
Specimen Minimum Volume Defines the amount of specimen required to perform an assay once, including instrument and container dead space. Submitting the minimum specimen volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory or perform reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum specimen volume may result in a QNS (quantity not sufficient) result, requiring a second specimen to be collected.
