Specimen Required

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). (Plasma gel tube

is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 0.8 mL of EDTA plasma

refrigerated.

Note:    1. Indicate plasma on request form.

                  2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).          

                  3. If ordering electronically, no form is required with the

                      specimen. If not ordering electronically, please

                      complete and submit a "Microbiology Request Form"

                      (Supply T244) with the specimen.

               

Serum

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s). (Serum gel tube is not

acceptable.) Spin down and send 0.8 mL of serum refrigerated.

Note:    1. Indicate serum on request form.

                  2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).            

                  3. If ordering electronically, no form is required with the

                      specimen. If not ordering electronically, please

                      complete and submit a "Microbiology Request Form"

                      (Supply T244) with the specimen.

 

Spinal Fluid

0.8 mL of spinal fluid. Do not centrifuge. Send specimen refrigerated

in a screw-capped, sterile vial. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen

be processed in an environment in which contamination of the

specimen by WNV DNA is not likely.

                  2. Label specimen appropriately (spinal fluid).    

                  3. If ordering electronically, no form is required with the

                      specimen. If not ordering electronically, please

                      complete and submit a "Microbiology Request Form"
