Specimen Required

Stool specimen (48 or 72 hour preferred, 24 hour or random accepted).

For a timed collection, the entire collection containing at least

5 g is required. For a random collection, a minimum of 5 g

(do not send entire collection) is required. Send specimen

frozen in container()s (Supply T291) supplied. See "Stool Collections"

in Special Instructions.

Note:    1.  Length of collection period is required on

                       request form for processing.

                  2.  For 3 days prior to and during the collection period:

                       A.     Patient should be on a fat-controlled diet (100-150 g

                                fat per day).

                       B.     No laxatives (particularly mineral oil and castor oil)

                       C.     No synthetic fat substitutes (eg, Olestra) or fat-

                                blocking nutritional supplements

                  3. Barium interferes with test procedure; a waiting period

                       of 48 hours before stool collection analysis is

                       recommended.

                  4.  Label all containers X of X, eg, 1 of 2, 2 of 2; and  

                 send all containers.  

                  5.  A separate order and collection should take place if

                       stool calcium, chloride, magnesium, osmolality,

                       potassium, sodium, or any microbiology testing is

                       desired.
