Additional Information: Patients who had a heterologous blood transfusion within the preceding 45 days (6 weeks), or who have received an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, can have false genetic test results as human DNA present in the blood may be a mixture of patient and donor DNA. For these patients, a saliva specimen (rather than blood) should be submitted for OIL28/61701 Interleukin 28B (IL28B) Polymorphism (rs12979860), Saliva. IL28B is expressed in the liver following HCV-infection. For liver transplant patients, the IL28B genotype of the recipient and the donor are independent predictors of sustained virologic response with combined pegylated-interferon and ribavirin therapy.(4)
