Antibodies to von Willebrand factor (VWF) are detected functionally by determining the degree of inhibition of ristocetin-induced agglutination. Ristocetin is an antibiotic which produces agglutination of normal platelets in the presence of VWF.(Mannucci PM, Lombardi R, Bader R, et al: Studies of the pathophysiology of acquired von Willebrand's disease in seven patients with lymphoproliferative disorders or benign monoclonal gammopathies.
