Unit Code 9152:
Sedimentation Rate, Blood

Print Friendly View

Method Description

The ESR is performed using the Westergren method. The test

measures the rate of sedimentation of erythrocytes in a 1:5 dilution

of 3.8% sodium citrate solution to whole blood. The blood is drawn

up in a column and allowed to sit undisturbed for 1 hour. The

sedimentation is read as millimeters (mm), recording the distance

from the top of the column to the meniscus of the erythrocyte

sediment. (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards,
