Unit Code 8628:
Galactokinase, Blood

Print Friendly View

Method Description

Galactokinase is determined by using red blood cells (as is

GPUT).  Radiolabeled galactose is incubated in the appropriate

buffer with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and red cell lysate.

Galactose-1-phosphate (the product of the action of galactokinase

on galactose and ATP) is quantitated after it is bound to ion-exchange

chromatography paper. (Beutler E, Paniker NV,Trinidad F:  The

assay of red cell galactokinase.  Biochem Med 1971;5:325-332)
