Screening for chronic iron overload diseases, particularly

hereditary hemochromatosis. 

 

Serum iron, TIBC, and percent saturation are widely used

for the diagnosis of iron deficiency. However, serum ferritin

is a much more sensitive and reliable test for demonstration of

iron deficiency.
