MPSSC - Overview: Mucopolysaccharides (MPS) Screen, Urine

Test Catalog

Test ID: MPSSC
Mucopolysaccharides (MPS) Screen, Urine

Useful For Suggests clinical disorders or settings where the test may be helpful

Preferred screening test for mucopolysaccharidoses

Genetics Test Information Provides information that may help with selection of the correct test or proper submission of the test request

Preferred test to screen for mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). Testing includes both quantitative and qualitative MPS analysis.

The urine mucopolysaccharides (MPS) screen is the preferred first-line screening test that provides quantitative analysis of total glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and qualitative liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of the specific sulfates that are associated with at least 13 different diseases.

An abnormal total GAG value may be obtained on a specimen that yields a normal LC-MS/MS pattern, and this artifact can occur when a patient is treated with low-molecular-weight heparin.

Profile Information A profile is a group of laboratory tests that are ordered and performed together under a single Mayo Test ID. Profile information lists the test performed, inclusive of the test fee, when a profile is ordered and includes reporting names and individual availability.
