Clinical and Laboratory Update in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation
October 1-2, 2009
Kahler Grand Hotel
Rochester, Minnesota
Conference Description
An estimated 37 million patients are affected by thrombotic disorders each year. This number will continue to rise with the increase in our aging population. Clinical and Laboratory Update in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation will focus on clinically applicable and cutting-edge methods used in the evaluation and treatment of patients with arterial and venous thrombotic disorders. This 2-day conference will include information on advances in the evaluation and management of common thrombotic disorders as well as specific aspects of uncommon thrombotic diseases. Lectures and case studies will be presented by Mayo Clinic faculty with ample opportunity to ask questions and discuss difficult diagnostic or management issues.
Conference Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:
- Identify the optimal strategy to diagnose and manage venous thromboembolism
- Manage anticoagulation during pregnancy in patients with prosthetic valves and venous thrombosis
- Employ a practical approach to evaluation and management of patients who have a transient ischemic attack or stroke
- Describe bridging therapy, using low molecular weight heparin, in patients on chronic warfarin therapy requiring invasive procedures
- Organize a practical approach to evaluation and management of acute coronary syndromes
- Identify a diagnostic and management plan for patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
- Recognize newer anticoagulants being used for treatment
- Recall the guidelines that were recently published by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP)
- Review the laboratory aspects of thrombophilia testing
Intended Audience
This program is designed for practicing clinicians, primary care providers, hematologists, cardiologists, obstetricians and gynecologists, nurses, laboratory scientists and technologists and vascular medicine specialists whose practices and interests include aspects of thrombotic disorders.
