Course Description
The Practical Surgical Pathology conference will address common but difficult diagnostic problems encountered by the pathologist in everyday practice. Every effort will be made to present cases of common practical value. Participants and faculty will review case histories, examine case images, and formulate the diagnosis. The unique subtleties and differentiating characteristics of each diagnosis are then highlighted. Faculty and participants will also discuss the strategy used for managing each patient’s case. Images of all cases presented will be provided on a DVD to be viewed by virtual microscopy.
The program format features multiple specialty areas each day. Throughout the two and one-half days of the conference, 32 cases will be presented and discussed. Audience participation is strongly encouraged.

Course Learning Objectives
By the end of the conference, participants should be able to:
- Identify common diagnostic problems of pathologies selected for study
- Interpret appropriate ancillary tests for study cases
- Classify each case according to pathology type
- Enumerate the treatment options of each case diagnosis
- Integrate diagnostic, clinical, and pathological challenges in pathologist-clinician communication methods

Intended Audience
This course is designed for practicing surgical pathologists.

The Practical Surgical Pathology conference will be held September 10-12, 2009. Course headquarters will be located in the Leighton Auditorium foyer on the second floor of the Siebens Medical Education Building, Mayo Clinic, 100 Second Avenue SW, Rochester, Minnesota. Meeting facilities are easily accessible by skyway and pedestrian subway, which connect Mayo Clinic to shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Registration
The registration fee is $650 for pathologists and $475 for residents and fellows. The registration fee includes tuition, comprehensive electronic course syllabus, virtual microscopy DVD, break refreshments and conference dinner. Although it is not the policy of Mayo Medical Laboratories Education Department to limit the number of participants, conference room facilities may necessitate closing of enrollment; therefore, early registration is strongly advised. Registration deadline is August 14, 2009. E-mail address is required upon registration. A letter of confirmation will be forwarded to this address upon receipt of payment and submitted registration. Present the letter of confirmation when checking in at the meeting registration desk.
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel your participation in this conference on or before August 14, 2009, your registration fee, less a $75 administrative fee, will be refunded. Mayo Medical Laboratories Education Department must receive written notification of your cancellation. No refunds will be made after August 14, 2009.

Rochester, Minnesota, is a friendly city that greets thousands of visitors from around the world each year. The city is served by a modern international airport with multiple flights daily from Chicago and Minneapolis via American or Northwest Airlines. Access to and from the airport is provided by taxicab, shuttle service, and rental car. The airport is located approximately 10 miles from the Mayo Clinic campus.

Recreation and Leisure Activities
Public tours of Mayo Clinic are provided each weekday beginning at 10:00 AM, except for holidays. The tours originate from Judd Auditorium, subway level of the Mayo Building, and last approximately one and one-half hours. The tour includes a 20-minute film on the history and operation of Mayo Clinic plus visits to points of interest in the Mayo, Plummer, Hilton, and Gonda buildings. Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minnesota, is the largest fully-enclosed retail and family entertainment complex in the United States. Along with 500 retail stores, restaurants, and nightclubs, the mall features Nickelodeon Universe and Underwater Adventures Aquarium, a walk-through aquarium featuring 15,000 fish.
