Printer-Friendly Version

Description

Phlebotomy: Beyond the Basics will address important issues faced daily by new phlebotomists, phlebotomy managers, those responsible for training new phlebotomists, and other patient care staff. This one-day conference will address issues such as identifying causes of needle stick injuries among phlebotomists, identifying the pros and cons of drawing samples through indwelling catheters, discuss the evolution of standard operating procedures (SOPs) from paper to technology, learning techniques to prevent collection errors, understanding the basic principles of Lean, and identifying techniques for performing difficult collections.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Identify ways to adapt learned techniques for performing difficult collections
  • Interpret different strategies for writing and training of SOPs
  • Evaluate trends in occupational exposure among health care workers
  • Name common causes of needlestick injuries among phlebotomists
  • Distinguish the basic principles of Lean production
  • Identify the common pre-analytical errors associated with specimen collection
  • Identify downstream effects generated from specimen collection errors
  • Define the relative risk of sample contamination for samples drawn via venipuncture and venous, and arterial lines

Intended Audience

This conference is designed for new phlebotomists, phlebotomy managers, those responsible for training new phlebotomists, and other patient care staff involved in specimen collections.
