Mayo Medical Laboratories offers continuing medical education programs to maintain, develop, and increase the knowledge, skills and performance required by professionals to successfully practice in today’s competitive health care arena. These programs encompass a variety of topics pertinent to the laboratory and clinical setting. Professionally orchestrated continuing medical education programs include:

Continuing Education Conferences

Offered throughout the year, these programs are designed to deliver up-to-date information and the latest strategies to optimize patient care and improve outcomes. Through our dedication to academic excellence, you can attend a variety of programs that incorporate proven formats such as lectures, case discussions, panel discussions and hands-on laboratory sessions. The programs are designed for physicians, medical technologists, medical technicians and other allied health professionals.

Disease Management Strategies

Secondary Access Required -- Offered 8 to 10 times a year, these programs discuss the importance of disease management strategies, focusing on the mission of providing the best care to every patient every day. Disease management strategies guide diagnoses and treatments by offering up-to-date patient care that is solidly based on scientific advancements. These strategies direct decisions in optimizing patient care and demonstrate the dedication to practice medicine that is evidence-based. This series is offered via live or archived Webcast. An Internet connection and Windows Media Player 9 or higher are necessary to receive the webcast. This program is appropriate for clinicians, pathologists, medical technologists, nurses and allied health staff.

Customer Service Programs

Primary Access Required -- This dynamic and interactive outreach support program, Laboratories Reaching Out, is a unique program designed exclusively for Mayo Medical Laboratories’ clients to help them develop, support and strengthen outreach efforts and the service levels they provide to the community.

Outreach Forums

Primary Access Required -- The Outreach Forums are a series of interactive conference calls designed to provide you an opportunity to discuss and overcome challenges faced in outreach development. The presentation handout is e-mailed to you prior to the conference call and can also be viewed with Global Crossing technology. Presentations are tailored based on pre-submitted questions from participants.

Phlebotomy Forums and DVD

Primary Access Required -- The Phlebotomy Forums are a series of interactive conference calls designed to provide you with an opportunity to discuss phlebotomy topics related to the outreach environment. The presentation handout is e-mailed to you prior to the conference call and can also be viewed with Global Crossing technology. Presentation can be tailored based on pre-submitted questions.

Mayo Medical Laboratories presents Fundamentals of Phlebotomy on DVD. This education program focuses on the phlebotomy venipuncture process including information on phlebotomy supplies, patient safety and patient identification. This comprehensive program on DVD is designed to supplement your hospital’s phlebotomy training and education.

Process Improvement Series

Primary Access Required -- The Process Engineering group at Mayo Clinic’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology provides process engineering and process improvement expertise. The group utilizes best practices methodologies and tools, direct process observation, comprehensive data analysis and a facilitated team approach. This group has substantial knowledge related to how process improvement tools can be applied to the health care system.

Quality Management Series

Primary Access Required -- Join our Quality Coordinators as they present information on how to build quality into the laboratory and maintain excellence in testing services. Quality Systems thinking is the first step to applying the 12 Quality System Essentials consistently throughout your laboratory’s operational areas. Implementing these principles can help your laboratory avoid costly and critical errors and change your approach from detection to prevention. This application of principles also links the patient from beginning of the path of workflow to the end.

Sales Training Programs

Primary Access Required -- A key element of a successful outreach program is professional sales. To grow the outreach program, the sales staff must focus on the strategic analysis required to successfully manage sales opportunities. In addition, the sales professional must possess the skills necessary to conduct sales calls. Strategic Selling® concentrates on the single most neglected aspect of selling: the in-depth analysis of account strategy that must come before the sales call. Conceptual Selling® fosters a customer-centered approach by focusing salespeople on why a client is really buying. This enables salespeople to focus their efforts, resulting in more effective sales calls. Large Account Management ProcessSM(LAMP®) is designed to create a team approach for managing, protecting and growing the outreach programs most important customers.

Visiting Faculty Programs

Primary Access Required -- Through this program, Mayo physicians, scientists and allied health professionals offer educational presentations to our clients throughout the country. Visiting Faculty Programs are offered through both videoconferencing and live presentations.
