LIS Replacement
Frequently Asked Questions
Updated March 2011
This pages defines terms commonly used during and after LIS replacement.
Absorb Test
If there are duplicate tests on an order, this function within the Soft application absorbs one of the tests to avoid duplication of tests on a single order. Example: If an order is created with a glucose test and a profile that also includes a glucose test, the Soft application will absorb the glucose test into the profile, ensuring that the test is only performed once.
Accession
A set of Mayo Medical Laboratories’ tests, ordered for an individual patient, which has a single laboratory order number. For example, a physician might order patient ABC a battery of tests: 8533 Total Testosterone, 8663 Luteinizing Hormone, and 8670 Follicle-Stimulating Hormone. This set of three tests will be included on one laboratory order, and will be referred to as an accession when the specimen is received.
Alpha Flagging
The placement of a result flag on a non-numeric response. Mayo Medical Laboratories is setting up appropriate tests with alpha flagging capabilities, but will not enable this feature until after the Moratorium Period.
Alternative Test Code
The system will enable both Lab3 and SCC Soft unit codes, allowing your organization to continue to use existing codes to order SCC Soft tests. The existing Lab3 codes will be referred to as alternative test codes. Mayo Medical Laboratories has mapped existing Lab3 codes to the SCC Soft codes.
Ask at Order Entry (AOE)
A series of questions that will be asked at the point of ordering a test. This functionality is also referred to as prompt tests. Example: When a urine test is ordered, the system will prompt the user to fill in the urine volume.
Client Go-Live
The date that the SCC Soft system will be activated in the Mayo Medical Laboratories environment. It will happen immediately after the Freeze Period. All production-level client orders and results will flow through the SCC Soft application.
Client LIS Moratorium Period
The Moratorium Period is inclusive of the Client Validation Freeze Period, and will extend before and after the Freeze Period. Mayo Medical Laboratories will place a moratorium on Laboratory Information System connectivity changes several weeks before the Freeze Period begins and several weeks after the Freeze Period ends. The SCC Soft Go-Live and Client Go-Live will also be inside the Moratorium Period.
Client Validation Freeze Period
The Freeze Period is a period of time that Mayo Medical Laboratories will not change anything in its environment while clients validate that they can send orders and receive results. The Freeze Period will start after MML has finished its validation of the SCC Soft application and test setup information. The Freeze Period is part of the Moratorium Period.
Generic Orderable
A laboratory interface feature that allows your organization to place a test order and receive the test result electronically through your organization's interface even though the test is not built in your laboratory file definition. The generic orderable is used for rarely-ordered tests or for tests not yet built in your organization's system.
Micro Test Change
Your organization will need to build new microbiology tests prior to Client Go-Live or system activation. This is because the data structure that exists in the current microbiology application, Misys, is dramatically different from the data structure in the new application, SoftMic. Because SoftMic handles the processing and sending of microbiology results differently, you will not be able to use existing microbiology tests.
Order System
The system through which your organization enters the order for testing at Mayo Medical Laboratories, such as a laboratory information system (LIS) or MayoAccess.
QA Plan
Because Mayo Clinic is changing the laboratory source system, Mayo Medical Laboratories is required to allow your organization the opportunity to revalidate the order and result data. Therefore, a window of time will be established to enable a client validation process. While Mayo Medical Laboratories is still in the midst of logistics planning, we will provide a Quality Assurance Plan for each client to complete the validation. (This applies to clients scheduled in a pre-defined scheduled slot).
SCC Soft Go-Live
The SCC Soft Go-Live will happen immediately after the Freeze Period. All production-level orders and results will flow through SCC Soft applications.
Specimen System
SCC Soft is a specimen-based system that tracks samples/tubes at the specimen level with unique specimen identification on each sample/tube. This is a major shift from the order-based system currently deployed at Mayo Clinic in which all samples/tubes associated with an order have the same order number on every sample/tube.
Test Change Moratorium
Mayo Medical Laboratories will stop all test changes and allow a period of time for the clients to validate their tests with the new SCC Soft application. See Test Change Moratorium in Effect.
