VWD NHLBI Guidelines (2008) Summary of Laboratory Recommendations

Slide 23

May 2011

In summary (this slide and the next): preanalytical conditions of the patient and the blood/plasma sample are important for optimum laboratory testing; recommended testing for VWD includes initial assays of VWF antigen, VWF ristocetin cofactor and factor VIII — with reflexive or supplemental additional assays (eg, VWF multimer analysis, RIPA, etc) – such as for further evaluation of abnormal results of the initial 3 tests; VWF antigen, VWF ristocetin cofactor activity and factor VIII assays should be referenced to the WHO standard and reported in IU (eg, IU/dL).
