VWF Multimer Analysis: Recommendations⁴

The ristocetin cofactor to antigen ratio can fail to detect loss of VWF highest molecular weight multimers – especially for certain acquired von Willebrand factor abnormalities (AVWA) or acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) patients (discussed in the Part I presentation, slide 9), such as can occur in association with aortic valvular stenosis or similar conditions with high shear blood flow. In such cases, VWF multimer analysis can be useful for identifying such acquired VWF abnormalities (AVWA) or acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS).
