Prosthetic hip and knee infection was defined as previously shown, but excluding microbiologic criteria.  Patients had to have at least one of the following:

  • Visible purulence of synovial fluid or intraoperatively, or
  • Acute inflammation on histopathologic tissue examination; or
  • The presence of a sinus tract communicating with the prosthesis.
