Our International Orgins

The open exchange of medical knowledge is a fundamental tradition at Mayo Clinic that was begun by its founders, Drs. William J. Mayo and Charles H. Mayo. The Mayos traveled around the world to learn from their peers. However, many of their peers were reluctant to share their knowledge. As a result, the Mayos vowed to have an “open door” to anyone who wanted to learn from their practice. By the turn of the twentieth century, physicians were assembling in Rochester to witness the Mayo brothers’ surgical techniques. To enhance the visitors’
experiences, the Mayos would discuss the operation while performing it and installed mirrors and risers to enhance the view. For more than 100 years, Mayo Clinic has opened
its doors to others, a tradition that Mayo Medical Laboratories continues today.
